Inspectors typically split piping into “circuits” to categorize piping inventory for inspection. Traditionally, this practice has been done based on convenience, with little consideration for corrosion or risk.

Because Pinnacle’s Mechanical Integrity (MI) services focus on identifying and prioritizing areas of high-risk, our circuitization efforts have the same goal. Fixed equipment and piping are grouped into systems and circuits by identifying where similar degradation and risk factors are likely to occur. Both systems and circuits are separated by the varying levels of degradation that are expected in each. For example, Pinnacle can define circuits based on temperature, pressure, process, or piping metallurgy, with the exact circuitization methodology customized per client, based on existing procedures and inspection strategies. During our circuitzation process, Pinnacle’s propriety Circuitizer™ software is utilized. This software electronically overlays the circuits on the facility’s CAD Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), and makes evergreening more manageable.

Once the circuitization effort is complete, Pinnacle will overlay the final set of piping circuits on the facility’s CAD P&IDs, which will enable the facility’s inspection department to turn the circuit layer on and off, and manage the circuits in CAD, rather than managing them on hardcopy P&ID printouts. In addition, after the electronic circuitization effort is complete, Pinnacle will deliver an electronic list of piping circuits and all associated line numbers and attributes to help the inspection department manage its piping program.
