On February 13, 2019, Pinnacle employees volunteered at Numbers and Neutrons, an event hosted by United Way Houston LINC. United Way LINC (Lead. Impact. Network. Change.) is a group of young professionals, 30 and under, who come together to help the Greater Houston community and network with like-minded individuals.
The Numbers and Neutrons event is a night dedicated to helping kids learn about math and science in new and exciting ways. Kids (3rd through 5th graders) from across the Houston area came together to learn about different areas in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) field.
At the event, LINC volunteers set up different stations for the kids to visit and interact with. These stations included “science fair”/STEM type activities, such as creating a light bulb circuit, making ice cream from scratch, estimating the M&Ms in a jar, creating a budget, and more.
A group of Pinnacle employees could be found at the “Galaxy Slime” station. Here, they helped students create a “galaxy” out of slime (borox, glue, water, etc.). The intent was for each of the ingredients to represent different aspects of space (gravity, stars, dark matter) and to have the students ask questions about each of them. Other employees helped with the “Phases of the Moon” station, where Oreos were used to represent the different moon phases.
